Best VPNs for Sky Go: how to watch Sky Go abroad 2026

If you want to watch Sky Go from abroad, you’ll need a reliable VPN. Sky Go is a popular streaming service that’s only available in the UK and Ireland, so if you try to access it from another country, you’ll run into geo-restrictions. A VPN helps by changing your IP address to a UK or Irish one, making it seem like you’re streaming from a supported location. However, not all VPNs work well with Sky Go, as the platform has VPN detection systems that can block VPN traffic.

To find the best VPN for Sky Go in July 2026, I tested 10 VPN providers to see which ones could reliably bypass Sky Go’s geo-restrictions and avoid its VPN detection. I compared them based on unblocking reliability, streaming speeds, pricing, and overall performance. Based on my testing, NordVPN came out as the overall best VPN for Sky Go, Surfshark stood out as the best budget option, and Proton VPN was the best privacy-focused choice, especially if you’re looking for the most affordable monthly plan. Below, you’ll find our complete list of tested VPNs, plus a simple step-by-step guide on how to get started.

How to watch Sky Go abroad with a VPN in 2026

To watch Sky Go outside the UK and Ireland, you need a VPN with British or Irish servers that can reliably get around Sky Go’s VPN detection. Here are simple steps to take to watch Sky Go abroad:

  1. Choose a VPN with servers in the UK and Ireland – my top choice is NordVPN, now 75%% OFF
  2. Install the VPN and set up your account
  3. Select a server located in the UK or Ireland and connect
  4. Open Sky Go, log in, and enjoy the streaming

Note: To use this method, you need to have a Sky TV account. Creating a new account from abroad won’t work unless you can provide a UK or Irish postcode, credit card details, and other information that proves you’re a resident in the UK or Ireland.

Key factors when considering a Sky Go VPN

Not all VPNs can unblock Sky Go, and some that work today may not work tomorrow as Sky Go updates its VPN detection systems. Others can slow your connection speed enough to negatively affect playback quality. After testing multiple VPNs for this article, here's what I think matters most when choosing one for Sky Go:

  • UK server variety. Sky Go detects VPN traffic by checking your assigned IP address against known VPN IPs and databases. During my tests, many VPNs were flagged either instantly or after some time, resulting in unreliable access. That’s why the more UK servers a VPN offers, the higher the chances of successfully accessing Sky Go are.
  • Fast enough speeds for live sports streaming. Sky Go is one of the main streaming platforms UK subscribers use to watch live sports like the Premier League, F1, and cricket while abroad. Since these are live events, even the smallest slowdown can cause buffering right when it matters most. That’s why it’s important to use a VPN that maintains strong speeds on UK servers.
  • Device and app compatibility. Choose a VPN with easy-to-use apps for your main Sky Go devices (phones, tablets, laptops, smart TVs) and router support, so you can stream on any device at home or abroad.

Top 3 best Sky Go VPNs in 2026

The 3 VPNs below proved to be the best choices for accessing Sky Go, as all of them offer high speeds and reliable Sky Go unblocking. Each one stands out for a different reason: NordVPN delivers the fastest speeds and the best overall streaming experience, Surfshark is the most affordable option, and Proton VPN offers privacy-first infrastructure, strong transparency, and the cheapest monthly plan. If you’re curious to see why other providers fell short, check out our list of VPNs that didn’t make our top 3.

1. NordVPN – fastest streaming VPN for Sky Go in 2026

NordVPN is my top pick for watching Sky Go abroad in 2026. It has over 490 servers across the UK and Ireland, which allowed me to unblock Sky Go every time I tested it without any connection drops. It also delivered the best speed retention results of all the VPNs I tested, making it the most reliable option for smooth Sky Go streaming from abroad.

Speed and streaming performance. In my tests, NordVPN delivered the strongest speed results of any VPN I tested for Sky Go. From my 940Mbps baseline connection, it reached 859Mbps while connected to a UK server, resulting in around a 91% retention rate. Such results are exceptional for a VPN and more than enough for smooth live streaming. I tested NordVPN’s performance during a live NRL game between the Rabbitohs and Broncos, and the stream stayed in 720p HD without any buffering.

To further test the connection’s stability, I also browsed social media in the background and didn’t notice any stream slowdowns. Since I ran the tests around 8 PM AEST on a Thursday, when weekday server load is usually higher, NordVPN’s stable performance stood out even more. For a streaming service like Sky Go, where one mid-match speed drop can ruin the experience, that consistency made NordVPN the most dependable VPN I tested.

UK server network. NordVPN runs 490+ servers in the UK and Ireland, including London, Dublin, Manchester, Glasgow, and Edinburgh. This large network helps avoid slowdowns and keeps connections stable when watching Sky Go abroad.

Device compatibility. NordVPN works on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS. It also works on routers and tvOS, so you can use Sky Go on many devices. With one NordVPN subscription you can use up to 10 devices simultaneously, which is usually enough for most households.

In case your device doesn’t support native VPN apps, like some gaming consoles and smart TVs, NordVPN offers a SmartDNS option as an alternative specifically for streaming. This can help you access geo-restricted streaming services like Sky Go if you’re streaming on a device that doesn’t have a dedicated VPN app. NordVPN also unblocks other platforms like BBC iPlayer, Netflix, and Hulu.

Pricing. NordVPN cost starts at $3.49/month for the Basic plan, which should be enough for streaming Sky Go. Every plan includes a 30-day money-back guarantee and a 3-day free trial, so you can try it risk free.

2. Surfshark – affordable Sky Go VPN with unlimited connections

Surfshark is a budget-friendly VPN for streaming Sky Go, especially if you want to stream while using the VPN on multiple devices at once. It unlocks Sky Go reliably and delivers smooth playback thanks to fast servers and the WireGuard protocol. Also, its obfuscated servers can hide your VPN use, making it appear as normal internet traffic, so you aren’t blocked.

Speed and streaming performance. Surfshark showed strong speed results in my Sky Go tests. With a 940Mbps baseline connection, it delivered 836Mbps on a UK server, retaining around 89% of the original speed. While it was slightly slower than NordVPN, the speeds were fast enough for a smooth Sky Go streaming experience.

I tested Surfshark’s performance during the live NRL Dolphins vs Roosters game, shortly after 8 PM AEST on Friday. The stream stayed at 720p HD, which is Sky Go’s highest quality setting, and I didn’t encounter any buffering or sudden quality drops. Another feature that stood out to me was Surfshark’s Bypasser. It’s essentially a split tunneling feature, which lets you choose which apps or websites use the VPN connection and which bypass it. In this case, I used it to keep Sky Go connected through a UK VPN server while accessing social media and internet forums outside the VPN connection. While most premium VPNs have this feature, Surfshark’s stands out because it works on macOS and supports website-based bypassing on iOS, which is still rare even among premium providers. For example, NordVPN doesn’t offer split tunneling on iOS or macOS. Since Surfshark unblocked Sky Go on the first try, I didn’t need to switch to a different server.

UK server network. Surfshark operates 490+ servers in the UK and Ireland, giving users plenty of options to avoid congestion and keep connections stable. It also unblocks platforms like Netflix, BBC iPlayer, and YouTube TV.

Device compatibility. Surfshark supports Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS. While Surfshark no longer offers Smart DNS support, you can still stream Sky Go on devices that support its native VPN apps or by using a router setup. A major advantage is unlimited device connections, making it ideal for households.

Pricing. Surfshark plans start at $2.49/month, making it one of the cheapest VPNs. All plans include a 30-day money-back guarantee, and you can get a free 7-day trial on mobile.

3. Proton VPN – privacy-focused VPN for Sky Go

Rating:
4.5
Works with Sky Go:✅ Yes
Servers in the UK and Ireland:950+ servers in the UK and Ireland

Proton VPN is an ideal choice for Sky Go users who prioritize privacy. It combines reliable Sky Go access with advanced security features, making it a good fit for those who want strong protection without sacrificing streaming quality. Also, its fast WireGuard protocol and the VPN Accelerator feature help maintain smooth playback with no pauses or delays.

Speed and streaming performance. While Proton VPN’s main strength is privacy, its Sky Go speed results were still very impressive. Compared to my 940Mbps baseline, it reached 844Mbps on a UK server and retained roughly 90% of my original download speed. Overall, it was slightly slower than NordVPN and very close to Surfshark, but still more than fast enough for smooth Sky Go streaming in 720p HD.

I ran the test during the live NRL Warriors vs Sharks match, around 6:30 PM AEST on Saturday. While I didn’t notice any buffering or lag even while browsing in the background, I did encounter a couple of CAPTCHAs when trying to access some social media platforms. Still, that didn’t affect my Sky Go stream. So, while Proton VPN wasn’t quite as seamless as NordVPN or Surfshark, it was still strong enough for Sky Go and better suited to privacy-focused users.

UK server network. Proton VPN runs over 20,400 servers worldwide, with more than 950 servers in the UK and Ireland. This wide availability helps maintain stable connections when accessing Sky Go from abroad. It also includes NetShield, which blocks ads, trackers, and known malicious domains.

Device compatibility. Proton VPN supports Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS, so you can watch Sky Go on most devices, including tablets. However, it doesn’t offer Smart DNS, which limits use on devices that cannot run VPN apps.

Pricing. Proton VPN pricing starts at $2.99/month with Proton Plus, which unlocks full VPN features. Proton Unlimited costs $7.99/month and includes extra security tools. All paid plans come with a 30-day money-back guarantee. While Proton VPN has a free version, do note that it’s not suitable for Sky Go because it doesn’t offer free UK or Irish servers, uses random server allocation, and can have slower speeds due to overloaded servers.

VPNs that didn’t make our top 3 for Sky Go

While the VPNs below managed to unblock Sky Go in my tests, they still fell short compared to my top 3. Some were less reliable at bypassing Sky Go’s geo-restrictions, others struggled to maintain stable speeds during live sports, or simply didn’t offer the same value for money. Here’s why they didn’t make the cut:

ExpressVPN

ExpressVPN was one of the more reliable VPNs I tested with Sky Go. I bypassed Sky Go's VPN detection while connected to its UK servers and streamed in HD with zero buffering. I also found ExpressVPN's Media Streamer Smart DNS feature handy, since it let me watch Sky Go on devices that don't support native VPN apps, like my gaming console and smart TV.

The main issue is overall value – while ExpressVPN is a solid VPN for Sky Go, it wasn’t faster or more reliable than NordVPN in my tests. NordVPN delivered better UK server speeds, more consistent unblocking, and includes useful streaming extras like Smart DNS, which makes it the stronger overall choice for Sky Go. ExpressVPN is still worth considering, but for Sky Go specifically, NordVPN does the same job better.

IPVanish

IPVanish is a solid Sky Go VPN that comes with 248+ UK servers and unlimited simultaneous connections. This means you can stream on every device in your household with just one subscription. During testing, speeds were enough for HD streams, and I didn't encounter any major issues while accessing Sky Go.

However, IPVanish struggled with consistency. While it did unblock Sky Go, I occasionally had to switch servers to get past Sky Go's VPN detection. At the same time, Surfshark also offers unlimited connections, includes useful extras like Bypasser, and got around Sky Go’s geo-restrictions more consistently in my tests. So, while it’s a decent VPN, there's no real reason to pick IPVanish over Surfshark for Sky Go.

CyberGhost

CyberGhost comes with streaming-optimized servers, including some labeled for specific UK platforms. Since it also has a large UK server network and budget-friendly long-term pricing, it sounds like an ideal VPN for Sky Go on paper.

However, in my testing, CyberGhost delivered weaker Sky Go performance than the top 3 VPNs, especially during live sports. I experienced speed drops that caused the stream to freeze and lag mid-game, and CyberGhost also struggled more than other VPNs when trying to get around Sky Go's geo-blocks. Even though it's cheaper than Surfshark, the lower price doesn’t make up for the slower speeds and inconsistent unblocking. For Sky Go access, my top 3 are the safer bet.

Why do I need a VPN to watch Sky Go abroad

Due to geo-restrictions, Sky Go is only available in the UK and Ireland. As such, viewers from Europe or the US cannot access this streaming service. They will instead be welcomed with this message: “Sky Go is only available to users connecting from within the UK or Republic of Ireland, unfortunately we cannot confirm that you are within these territories at the moment. Please try later.”

Sky Go error message
Sky Go error message

Luckily, a UK or Irish IP address will help you watch Sky Go abroad. You can get one by using a reliable VPN with many servers in those regions. Plus, a VPN grants other excellent benefits.

For example, the same VPN that unblocks Sky Go in the US can bypass geographical restrictions on other online services. That means you can also access other UK-specific streaming platforms like BBC iPlayer and Channel 4.

My favorite benefit of a VPN is that it grants privacy and hides my online activities from my ISP. This also makes it less likely that I’ll experience internet speed throttling.

Troubleshooting Sky Go not working with a VPN

I noticed that on rare occasions, Sky Go won’t work with a VPN. If that happens, the website displays an error message.

If you’re wondering why Sky Go doesn’t work with a VPN, there could be multiple reasons. For example, your actual location and IP address are leaking because of a faulty VPN connection. Also, it can be because you accidentally connected to the wrong server location.

Another suspect is your browser’s stored cache and cookies, which can inadvertently expose your location. Finally, there’s a chance your chosen VPN service simply can’t bypass geographical restrictions imposed by Sky Go.

If Sky Go VPN isn't working, try some of these basic fixes:

  • Reconnect to the VPN to change your UK VPN server
  • Make sure you’re connected to a server in the UK or Ireland
  • Clear history, cookies, and cache from your web browser
  • Set English as your OS language and change the time zone to UTC +0
  • Disable all services that use your location
  • Update your OS to the latest version
  • Switch to a premium VPN with a proven ability to unblock streaming sites, like NordVPN
NordVPN for Sky Go

Can I use a free VPN to watch Sky Go abroad

I don’t recommend using a free VPN for Sky Go. Free VPN providers often have limited server options, meaning they might not offer a server in the UK or Ireland. Even if one is available, it can be overcrowded and lead to constant lagging.

In addition, using a free VPN can cause more harm than good. Free providers may distribute malware or collect private user information to share with third parties.

The only free VPN I can recommend is Proton VPN, which offers a free version of a premium VPN. Please note that it’s quite limited and offers servers in only 10 countries, none of which are in the UK or Ireland. Therefore, you won’t be able to use it to unblock Sky Go.

Instead of a free VPN, I recommend choosing a premium solution with a free trial or a money-back guarantee. This way, you can test the service before committing to a long-term subscription plan.

Yes, using a VPN to watch Sky Go is legal in most countries. It only becomes an issue if you’re in a place where VPN use itself is restricted or banned, such as North Korea, Turkmenistan, Belarus, or Iraq.

Sky Go’s Terms of Service don’t explicitly ban VPNs or mention them at all. That said, Sky Go may block VPN connections if it detects one. This is done to enforce regional licensing rules, not to penalize users. In practice, it’s very unlikely you would face any legal consequences for watching Sky Go with a VPN.

Can Sky Go detect that I’m using a VPN?

Yes, in theory, Sky Go can detect that you’re using a VPN. Here’s how Sky Go can detect you’re trying to access its service outside Ireland or the UK:

  • IP range blacklisting. Streaming platforms regularly update a list of IP addresses in the VPN pool. These addresses are often associated with large data centers or hosting services where VPN providers lease IPs. When Sky Go detects a connection from one of these IP addresses, it blocks your connection.
  • Geo-location mismatching. Changing your IP address may not be enough to access Sky Go. Your actual location can also be identified by factors like GPS location and time zone settings. If your IP address says you’re in a different location or time zone, this gives away the fact that you’re using a VPN.
  • Traffic patterns. Most VPN server IP addresses are shared between multiple users. If Sky Go detects an unusual amount of traffic coming from a single IP address, it’s an indication that the IP address belongs to a VPN server.

That’s why it’s important to use a reliable VPN that regularly rotates its IP addresses, refreshes server connections, or uses smart routing to send your traffic through different paths. All these make it much harder for Sky Go to flag or block your connection, keeping your access to the platform more consistent.

How we tested best VPNs for Sky Go

The Cybernews research team and I reviewed 41 VPN services in June 2026 to find the best ones for streaming Sky Go abroad. The speed tests were done from Vilnius, Lithuania, making it somewhat of a close range test. The first thing I checked was whether each VPN had servers in the UK or Ireland, since that’s the bare minimum needed to unblock Sky Go. From there, I put every shortlisted VPN through our full VPN testing process, scoring each one across the factors that matter most for Sky Go specifically:

  1. Sky Go unblocking and detection (35%). This is the most important factor, since Sky Go actively detects and blocks VPNs more aggressively than most streaming services. I connected to UK servers and tested whether each VPN could open and stream Sky Go on the first try, then checked if it held access across multiple sessions rather than working once and getting blocked later. Only VPNs that beat Sky Go's detection consistently and kept stable connections made my list.
  2. Speed and retention on UK servers (30%). Sky Go is heavily used for live sports like Premier League and rugby, where any speed drop causes freezing at the worst moment. Based on a 940Mbps baseline, I measured how much speed each VPN retained on UK servers and tested for buffering during live streams. I repeated this across different UK server and device combinations to confirm the performance was consistent, not a one-off.
  3. UK and Ireland server network (20%). A larger UK and Ireland server pool matters for two reasons: it spreads the load for better speeds, and it gives you backup options if one server gets flagged by Sky Go. I checked how many servers each provider runs in both countries and how reliably I could connect to them.
  4. Device compatibility (15%). Sky Go is watched across phones, tablets, and laptops, so I tested each VPN on Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS to make sure the apps were stable and easy to use on every device people actually stream Sky Go on.

Wrapping up

Sky Go only works in the UK and Ireland, so accessing it while traveling requires a VPN that can reliably bypass location blocks. The problem is that many VPNs either fail to unlock Sky Go or struggle with slow, inconsistent streaming performance.

Based on my hands-on tests, NordVPN is the best VPN for Sky Go in July 2026. It connected instantly, maintained fast streaming speeds, and accessed the platform without any errors. It also offers a free trial and a money-back guarantee, so you can try it risk-free. That said, the other VPNs mentioned above are solid alternatives as well. The right pick ultimately comes down to what features matter most to you and how much you want to spend.
